Social Contextual Factors And Their Influence On Translation Of Culture-Specific Items

This thesis explores social contextual factors and their influence on translation of culture-specific items. This topic is imbued with obvious significance.First, the thesis briefly tells about the research background, the intended purpose, the methods and the structure as well as main ideas of the research. Next, the thesis surveys context in an integrated manner and the rewriting theory meanwhile, it introduces the definition and classification of culture-specific items. Then, it discusses major translation strategies. What this emphasizes is foreignization and domestication posed by Venuti. Afterwards, the thesis probes into the functions of context and the influence of social contextual factors on translation of culture-specific items by means of various examples which are analyzed properly. Finally, the thesis provides a case study to illustrate the influence of social-context factors on translation of culture-specific items in Hong Lou Meng(红楼梦).It is hoped that this research will contribute to cultural research and translation studies.
