One of the major events of religious exchanges between China and Japan during the Edo era,can be said to the spread of Obaku by Yin Gen Long Qi Zen Master and his disciples.As the ancestor of Obaku,there have been many research results on Yin Gen,and some historical materials have also been introduced.However,exclusive of Yin Gen,the research on the monks of Huang Bo,especially in China,is rarely concerned.For the initial stage of the Obaku,it can be said that Moku An,which was one of Yin Gen's disciples,had made greatest contribution to the spread of its thought.After t Yin Gen Zen Master's retirement,as the second abbot of Obaku,Moku An Master spareed no effort on the development of Obaku and the construction of temple.Moku An Zen Master was highly respected by Japanese people and the imperial court at the time.No matter the royal class,officials of the Tokugawa shoguate,the feudal lord,or followers and common people,they might pay a formal visit personally or ask Moku An to write a poetry verse,title praise and so on.Some of them worked as benefactors and do their best to support Moku An Zen Master's work.At that time,people called Moku An and Soku Hi,who was his junior fellow apprentice,as "Two amrita-dvaras"or"Niketsu".This thesis starts with the poem verse of Moku An Zen Master,the purpose of this study is to examine the actual situation of the spread of Obaku in Japan and the reasons for the acceptance of Japanese society in detail.The first chapter of the paper examines the time background.First of all,to clarify the original condition of Obaku Zen's spread,we examined the foreign policy of China and Japan,and the religious policy of the Edo shogunate,and.From the first to third sections of the second chapter,based on the "Yearbook of Moku An Zen Master",we described the life of Moku Master.It was divided into two stages:" Moku An in China" and " Moku An in Japan",which was combining with Zen Master's quotations and poems.At chapter III,mainly focuses on the poems of Moku An.First of all,we examined the meaning of "verse" in Buddhism,then we enumerated the writings of Moku An,at last,we analyzed the role of "poetry" in Zen Buddhism and Moku An's social intercourse.At chapter IV,we made a list of Japanese disciples of Moku An Zen Master,the picked out TutsuGyu Doki and Aoki Shige Kane,clarified the devotion of them in the growth of Obaku.In the V chapter,combining with the Yearbook of Moku An,the relevant content of his letters and poems,we presented the social intercourse between Moku An and the officials of the Edo shogunate and the Totsuzi.Then critiquesomed the contributions of these people in Moku An's missionary activities.Finally sort out some of the poems in Moku An's journey,analyzed Zen Master's mood.This article analyzes the social intercourse between Moku An and various of Japanese people through his poems,and clarifies the reason why the Obaku was widely accepted in Japan.Secondly,by analyzing the contents of Moku An Zen Master's poems,we can get a glimpse his Japanese image,so as to provide a new perspective for grasping the Japanese view of the monks in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties.
