Nostalgia As A Promoter On Friend Quality In Young Adults,with Attachment Styles As Moderators

Friendships are essential for individual's personality and interpersonal function development.Those who have higher friendship quality are considered to have better interpersonal competence,social adaptation and subjective well-being.Nevertheless,little is known about the promotion of friendship quality,especially regarding young adults.Recent researches on nostalgia have revealed its positive effect on individual's psychological health,as fostering social connectedness,bolstering sense of belonging and alleviating loneliness,which are highly associated with friendship quality.Hence,the current research intends to examine the influence of nostalgia on individual's friendship.The current research consists of two studies,which illustrate how state nostalgia and trait nostalgia affect young adults' friendship,as well as the moderation of attachment styles.The general conclusion is that state nostalgia promotes individual's friendship quality while trait nostalgia has a positive association with individual's friendship quality.In addition,Individuals with different nostalgia traits and attachment styles differ in the degree of friendship quality increase.Study 1 focus on the one-to-one friendship and reveals that,state nostalgia promotes individual's friendship quality while trait nostalgia has a positive association with individual's friendship quality.Individuals both in high and low trait nostalgia increase friendship quality in high nostalgia state.High nostalgia state promotes individual's friendship quality of Preoccupied ones,Fearful ones and Secure ones,but not Dismissing ones.Study 2 focus on the one-to-group friendship and reveals that,state nostalgia promotes group friendship quality while trait nostalgia has a positive association with group friendship quality.Individuals both in high and low trait nostalgia increase group friendship quality in high nostalgia state,with low trait nostalgia ones gaining more benefits.High nostalgia state promotes group friendship quality of Preoccupied ones,Secure ones and Fearful ones,but not Dismissing ones.The conclusion of the current research provides a new sight in friendship studies as well as in nostalgia studies.It shed a light on the possibility of developing a systematic nostalgia therapy for young adults suffering from problematic friendship or interpersonal relationship to promote their relationship quality and subjective well-being.
