A Study Of Creative Treason In Ezra Pound's English Version Of Shi Jing

Shi Jing,as the first collection of poems in China,is the headwater of the Chinese literature and culture.As one of the Chinese Five Classics,for many centuries it has drawn the attention of scholars and translators.The English translation of Shi Jing has a history of nearly three hundred years.James Legge,Arthur Waley of England and Ezra Pound of America are all famous translators of Shi Jing.Ezra Pound,the translator of Shi Jing discussed in this thesis,is not only an outstanding poet but also an influential translator.He is the leading literary figure in the 20 th century Western literary world.His English version of Shi Jing,The Classic Anthology Defined by Confucius,is quite poetic but differs with the original work greatly.It is controversial because of the creative treasons to the original.Although the study on the deep connection between Pound and China has achieved fruitful results in China in recent years,Pound's English translation of Shi Jing needs to be further explored.This thesis explores the creative treasons in Ezra Pound's English version of Shi Jing from the perspective of Medio-translatology.Firstly,some information about Shi Jing and Ezra Pound is introduced and the previous study on English versions of Shi Jing and Pound's English translation of Shi Jing are presented.Then the theoretical basis of this study,theory of Medio-translatology and its core concept – creative treason are discussed.In the main body of this thesis,Pound's creative treasons in his translation of Shi Jing are exemplified and categorized into creative treasons in verse stanzas and lines in poetic form,creative treasons in Chinese characters in language and some creative treasons in the reproduction of Confucianism;in accordance with the related theories of Medio-translatology and creative treason theories,these creative treasons are analyzed for their possible causes.Through the analysis it can be found Pound's creative treasons in his version of Shi Jing are more or less the declaration and continuation of his poetics and one of his means to achieve cultural rejuvenation in the decadent and chaotic Western society.
