Generally speaking,Pound's poetry translation has a great impact on the development of modern American poetry. His translated work of Chinese poems,Cathy, was warmly welcomed by westerners.American poets intend to break through the rigid rhythm of poem in Victorian period and to create a new rhythm scheme which makes a poem more beautiful in its rhyme.Actually,Pound's advanced poetic theory is more or less influenced by Chinese poem features. However,Pound's identity as translator has not been universally acknowledged. His translated version of Shi Jing,The Classic Anthology Defined by Confucius, receives less attention than Cathy.Actually,Pound's The Classic Anthology Defined by Confucius provides a theoretical guidance for poetry translation. This thesis analyzes the application of Pound's translation theories including creative translation theory, energy of language, emotional equivalence, etc.in his own translated work. With a detailed look at Pound's translation thoughts in his translated version of Shi Jing,it can be found that:Firstly,Pound's translation thoughts have a great practical significance. The application of creative translation theory will not constitute the unfaithfulness to the emotion and images expressed in the original poems. On the contrary, his creative translation theory may inspire contemporary translators to break away from traditional concept of translation and to recreate new concepts for poetry translation.Secondly, strategies for emotional equivalence and juxtaposition of images provide translators with specific methods for releasing the energy of language.During the translating process,a translator can release the force of a language through their creative arrangement of images.Thirdly, the ideogrammic method proposed by Pound is likely to bring inspirations for English-Chinese translators. His thought on Chinese ideograph may inspire later translators to dig the treasure of a language and show it to target readers. This thesis is divided into seven parts, including an introduction, five chapters which address different aspects of this study, and a conclusion of the guiding significance of Pound's translation thoughts. The first part is about the foreign and domestic studies on Ezra Pound's translation thoughts;the opening chapter provides a brief introduction to Ezra Pound and his translation thoughts;the second chapter is about the studies on Shi Jing at home and abroad,as well as the speech features of Shi Jing;the next three chapters analyze Ezra Pound's translation thoughts reflected in The Classic Anthology Defined by Confucius respectively.Furthermore, the guiding significance of Ezra Pound's translation thoughts in poetry translation will be discussed as well;and the last part concludes the thesis.
