Creative treason is a phenomenon that is inevitable in the process of translation."Creative Treason" was put forward by French sociologist Escarpit who regarded all translation activities as a kind of creative treason. Chinese scholar Xie Tianzhen introduced this term to China, he extended the concept to the whole process of translation including translating, accepting and spreading. He also pointed out that the essence of the contradictions in the translation process is the collision between different cultures.For a long time, translation has been regarded as an appendant of literary work, the activities of translator have been thought as simple correspondences of words. The standard of judging translated works has not had a final verdict. Introducing the concept of creative treason provides a new perspective to solve these problems. This thesis will point out that creative treason in literary translation is objective and insurmountable by analyzing literary translation’s characteristics. The background of main factors will be taken for the entry point which will focus on the influence from the background of the original, translator and target readers. Thus the conclusion is that literary translation is the result of translator’s subjective initiative and treasonous creation.The translation of style has always been a hot issue discussed in the field of translation. Whether the translator can have his own style, what standard should be used to judge the translator’s style and what kind of relationship should exist between translator’s style and the original have been under discussion. Taking Gone with the Wind translated by Fu Donghua as an example, this thesis will analyze translator style from six aspects:words, sentences, paragraphs, rhetoric, register and narrative style.The sociality of translation also shows the creative treason’s social attribute. In addition to the translation, creative treason’s influence and functions in other social fields are worthy of discussing. This thesis will probe the sociality of creative treason from three aspects: cultural significance, social significance and translators’effort.The purpose of this study is to observe the literary translation from literary perspective, take the literary translation as literary work and give the equal status to translators. Creative treason’s social attribute and social thesis are proposed, and that will open up a new perspective for the development of creative treason.There are six sections in this thesis. Introduction introduces the literature review and the purpose, significance, structure of this study. Chapter One analyzes the main factor of creative treason——background, proves the objectivity of creative treason. Chapter Two, through disassembling Fu Donghua’s version of Gone with the Wind, shows the relationship between creative treason and translator style, analyzes the formation of translator style from six aspects. Chapter Three expounds the limitation of creative treason for translator. Chapter Four discusses the sociality of creative treason from cultural significance, social significance and translators’ effort. Conclusion summarizes the whole thesis and expects the development of creative treason.
