The Research Of Dongqichang's Method Of Calligraphy Study

Dong Qichang is a great calligrapher who made a systematic study of classical calligraphy since Wang Xizhi's period,and collected and carved calligraphy of Xi Hongtang from the Jin(317-420)to Yuan(1271-1368)Dynasty.Dong appreciated and collected,and wrote postscripts on the classic works,which enabled him to leave a lot of copyworks and theories to us.This paper collects Dong's representative copyworks over his life from the age of 35 until his death(1636,at the age of 82).Combined with calligraphy of Xi Hongtang,we found that who had been studied by Dong can cover almost all famous calligraphers from East Jin to Yuan Dynasty.Among them,all works of Wang Xizhi,Yan Zhenqin,Mi Fu were Dong's study resources.Actually,Dong didn't faithfully represent the original works,or demonstrate them with his own style,compared with what Wang Duo did.Therefore,this paper draws a conclusion that copyworks of Dong are featured with defining classic,personalized system,which can be seen in all his existing copyworks.In contrast with general copyworks,Dong apparently showed his active sense of engagement and creativeness.This is also why he could integrate all the merits of those classics.His own method served his study and practice that he can apply different methods to meet with his needs.His different and dynamic methods were ver,y helpful for his calligraphy.When choosing specimens,Dong tried his best to use authentic works as many as possible.In addition,he made great efforts to trace to the origins of certain calligraphic style he learned.All these reflect Dong's great enthusiasm and thorough motivation towards his studies.Along with his practice,Dong developed his copyworks.From his existing copyworks and his theories in Other Books of Rongtai,and essays of Huachanshi,etc,we can summarize his main methods of copyworks.Dong's achievement indicates that his methods have their feasibility.Hence,the study of his methods can guide us with today's studies and researches.Enlightened by his methods,the author applies them into his own calligraphic studies and creation.
