Dong Qichang and Wang Duo were the last two great calligraphers who had studied the ancient calligraphy book history. Both Dong Qichang and Wang Duo's adored the calligraphy of Wen and Jin Dynasties and have done a large number of imitation. However, due to their different life experiences and personalities, two very different artistic styles and theories of calligraphy were formed.Dong Qichang stressed that "Zen into the word","the calligraphical writings can be in one with the original copy, but it has its own spirit ".In the imitating process of "the ancient into me",Dong was seeking the "plain innocent".Wang Duo,on the other hand, was following the principle of "not leaving the ancient, not molding it".And staying with the rule of "I became the ancient",Wang realized the aesthetic ideal of calligraphy with "profound and surprising variation".This paper summarizes the main factors of different styles of calligraphy from the comparative study of Dong Qichang's and Wang Duo's calligraphy practices and calligraphy ideas. This paper is mainly divided into four chapters to compare the imitation of the ancient calligraphy of Dong Qichang and Wang Duo and analyse them.Chapter one is to explore the imitation concept of Dong Qichang and his practice. The main focus of the Chapter two is on the view on the imitation of Wang Duo and his calligraphy. In the third Chapter,it talks about and compares the observation about imitation of Dong Qichang and Wang Duo,from three aspects, the shape, the style and the content. The last Chapter discusses the influence of Dong Qichang's and Wang Duo's calligraphical concepts on the later generations.
