Martin Amis is one of the most important writers in modern Britain.He gained the Maugham prize after publishing his first novel The Rachel Papers.It is not only the prototype of Amis' integral style,but also establishes the keynote of his works in the future.The novel The Rachel Papers involves a special historical period,and it is a microcosm of The Times,and the concentrated expression of spirit of youth.The living state of the young reflected in The Rachel Papers still has the research value until today.In the paper,the research status of Martin Amis and The Rachel Papers in the domestic and foreign academic circles are first summarized from the perspective of youth subculture.Then,the important performance of the novel is listed from the aspects of root causes,symptoms,and treatment.Chapter one combs the historical background of The Rachel Papers.Because of all kinds of chaos and catastrophe in the society,the youth became disoriented,and began to rebel against the social mainstream culture.Chapter Two describes the obvious symptoms of British youth subculture represented by drugs,sex and rock.Chapter Three describes Charles' s experience,explores the possibility of treating youth subculture.For example,disease healing,and experience in gain and loss of love as well as self writing way made Charles become a young man at the age of twenty according with social expectation.Based on the specific analysis of the three chapters,the author tries to point out the relations between the change of special historical period and the youth subculture,and finally raise the experience worthy of reference for today's Chinese youth.
