On Translation Of Echo Chan's Prose The Stories Of Sahara From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The topics of Modern Chinese prose widely cover human,society and nature,the unique features of which are the least-restricted writing form and the sincerest emotional expression.As a great treasure in the Chinese literature,modern Chinese prose highly expresses the characteristic spirit of that time,so the translation should be excellent enough to introduce the thoughts of the authors to the target language readers.This thesis is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of two pieces of prose from the renowned Taiwanese female writer Echo Chan's prose collection the Stories of Sahara,namely,Learning Medicine Well and Curing the Sick and Seeking for love.Echo's prose has many stories with a strong readability,whose proses are involved in wide topics and full of exoticism.Her writing style is simple,romantic and full of unique charm.She expresses her love for life,freedom and human nature,and all these constitutes Echo's sincere feeling in her works:true disposition.Echo's proses are of great value in C-E translation of literary.Nida's functional equivalence theory is a very famous theory in the world,which highlights that translation is not only achieving functional equivalence on vocabulary,but also on sentences,semantics and styles.And the translation not only conveys the information of lexical level,but also has a deep cultural information.He also pointed out "In translation,meaning is the most important,and form is the second".The translation of many other literary genres are often produced under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,while few translators have employed it to study the translation of Echo Chan's prose.The author of this paper combines Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory with English versions of Echo's prose,the Stories of Sahara.In this translation practice,the author makes an analysis of Echo's writing style and the characteristics of the prose from three aspects:lexical level,syntactic level and textual level,including Chinese idioms,four-character structures,sentences without subject and passive sentences.Besides,the sentences of Echo's prose are short and concise,and Echo is good at using figures of speech.The author hopes that under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,she can perfectly complete the whole translation practice.The fourth part is the main part of this translation practice,in which the author selects some typical translation cases to be analyzed in detail under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory,and adopts some translation strategies,such as reorganization,literal translation,free translation,domestication and foreignization to achieve a successful translation.Finally,the author summarizes the experience and deficiencies in this translation practice,in order to make a better work for translation practice in the future.
