The name “Echo Chan” must be not strange to many readers. Echo once put allher past in her mind and traveled across high mountains, deserts, forests, rivers andoceans. Though she has left us for a long time, we are still familiar with her, hernatural and elegant temperament, her roaming about between skyline and promontory.We are so familiar with her that we have almost forgotten her leaving us for overtwenty years. In the1980s, her novel “Stories of Sahara” was the talk of Chineseworld and Echo herself became a typical character in the field of light literature. Onceshe was one of the Taiwan writers who had caused much of a stir in the Mainland. Shewas also one of the influential and lasting Taiwan writers. There has been three “Tideof Echo Chan” in the Chinese Mainland from1980s to now. Now many readers arestill reading her works. We can say she was a legend in the literature history. Whathas caused this? This thesis tries to explore the implication of this from thefollowing aspects: her life experience, writing style and her consciousness of writing.Based on texts we discuss her unique perspectives of creation and art construction,analyze the social background and the social effect of “Tide of Echo Chan” andreaders’ reading psychology and aesthetic expectation, and to further analyze thecauses of this phenomenon’s beginning and attenuation of“Tide of Echo Chan.This thesis discusses Echo Chan and the phenomenon of “Tide of Echo Chan”in three chapters.The Introduction introduces Echo Chan’s life and works, reviews the researchresults on her works at home and abroad, puts forward the aim of this thesis. Chapters1-2discuss Echo Chan works and summarize the themes and styles of her texts.Chapter3analyzes the causes of the phenomenon“Tide of Echo Chan”,that is, thesocial background, readers’ way of acceptance and the writer’s legendary effect. TheConclusion discusses the causes of the attenuation of the phenomenon and makessome reflection on it, recognizing her contribution to the Chinese modern andcontemporary literature.Echo Chan and her works catered to the market demand of a particular time andspace. For a certain time, her works had numerous readers, but with time going, ittends to attenuate. This phenomenon still has enlightenment on the creation ofliterature works. Echo Chan has left to readers her unique aesthetic feeling of reading and appreciation of the beauty. Her works play an important role in the literaturehistory.
