A Critical Discourse Analysis On Intertextual Phenomena In HUIDUANZI

Intertextuality is put forward in late 1960s',the so-called intertextuality is that any text is the choice and absorption of other texts,the author's choice of the text is not arbitrary,but conveys author's own ideological orientation or reflects a certain power relationship.So the theory of intertextuality soon receives concern of critical discourse analysis(CDA)in 1970s'.Critical discourse analysis is based on systematic functional linguistics,focusing on the relationship among language,ideology and power.As a crucial concept in CDA,intertextuality reflects a kind of language colonization phenomenon,which aims to penetrate a certain ideology and manipulate people's values as well as thinking pattern through the permeation of language.Intertextuality also reveals how a text selects the discourse orders,and the change of discourse orders is the reflection of ideology and the change of power relations.At present intertextual analyses in CDA are mainly concentrated on public discourses such as news reports,official documents,advertisements and educational discourses,which mainly reflect that the power class achieve language legitimation and get power control by quoting moral rules,experts discourses and mainstream discourses etc.Intertextuality in public discourses plays an important role in reflecting the trend of social ideology and in revealing power relations from the perspective of CDA.HUI DUAN ZI,also called grey humor,refers to a kind of joke which generally uses the negative social events as a topic and intends to criticize social evils which are concerned with people's life.It is always expressed in a hidden and indirect way,which makes intertextuality a common phenomena in HUI DUAN ZI.From the perspective of CDA,however,there is little research involved in discussing HUI DUAN ZI or intertextual phenomena of HUI DUAN ZI.This thesis intends to make a tentative exploration on intertextual phenomena of HUI DUAN ZI from the perspective of CDA,aiming to lead the public to hold deliberate and critical attitude to HUI DUAN ZI by criticizing its undesirable impact of HUI DUAN ZI.In line with Xin Bin's classification of intertextuality,based on systemicfunctional linguistic(SFL for short)theoretically,and combined with Fairclough's three-dimensional discourse model methodologically,this thesis adopts quantitative and qualitative research method to analyze the data of 43 HUI DUAN ZI(chosen andselected from different websites,blogs,Baidu Tieba and Forum)about housing price,employment and education,aiming to discuss how editors enlarge the social injustice and express right claims by using intertextual discourses and how editors arouse mass resonance and control the public ideology.And the thesis tries to solve the following research questions:1.How is ideology embedding in intertextual HUI DUAN ZI?2.How is power embedding in intertextual HUI DUAN ZI?3.What is the illegitimation in intertextual HUI DUAN ZI?Through the analysis of the above questions,this thesis draws conclusions as follows:Firstly,the analysis on lexical classification and transitivity system in ideational metafunction of intertextual HUI DUAN ZI aims to reveal the ideology embedded in intertextual phenomena of HUI DUAN ZI.Relexicalization and overlexicalization are two phenomena of lexical classification.In the process of relexicalization,the editors of HUI DUAN ZI use the ways of adapting fixed words or idioms and converting the grammatical structure of the original words,etc.to give new words negative and ironic meanings,which reflects editors' criticism to the current social situation and self-mockery to the helpless of reality.In terms of overlexicalization,intertextuality in overlexicalization scoffs at unfair phenomenon in social events and reveals editors' negative attitude towards social issues.Besides,the analysis on transitivity system shows that intertextual HUI DUAN ZI lays the stress on material processes(220,taking up 60.6% of all processes).Large proportion of material process makes the events in HUI DUAN ZI more objective and close to the facts.As Goal(139)is the central focus of material process,intertextual phenomenon of Goal plays an important role in highlighting and exaggerating the seriousness of the event.Secondly,the analysis on direct speech as well as modality and mood expressions in interpersonal metafunction aims to discuss the hidden power in intertextual phenomena of HUI DUAN ZI.As for direct speech,the editors directly criticize and attack the immoral and misconduct of the power class by constructing fictional conversations and quoting the words of authority figures or institutions and damage the authority of the power class at the same time.Besides,in terms of modality and mood expressions analysis,editors of HUI DUAN ZI make intertextual transformation and play tricks on words and deeds of authorities and power class through modal verb and particle and other means,aiming to reduce the legitimacy of the power class and to challenge and weaken their power and authority.Thirdly,the editors of HUI DUAN ZI belittle the power class and realize the illegitimation by presenting the negative content of the power class in intertextuality.Illegitimation of intertextual phenomena in HUI DUAN ZI denies the legitimacy and rationality of the power class,which reflects editors' confrontation to the power class.In summary,editors enlarge and exaggerate the errors of the power class and social contradictions through intertextuality so as to express their discontent emotion to the social reality.HUI DUAN ZI plays a social function of vigilance to some extent.However,with the enlargement of social contradictions and the deviations of social norm,it is easy to make people full of pessimistic complaints.At the same time,HUI DUAN ZI controls people's thoughts and behavior to a certain extent,it is easy to make the less determined readers go astray and then seriously affects their power view,outlook on life and values,thus the harmony and solidarity of society as a whole will be seriously affected.In the face of the widespread popularization of HUI DUAN ZI nowadays,it is imperative to cultivate people's positive attitude,to help people grasp the correct political direction,to constantly strengthen their own cultivation,and to resist the erosion of these negative energy.Therefore,making critical analysis of intertextual phenomenon in HUI DUAN ZI will help editors to weaken negative energy and transfer positive energy in society by correctly using intertextuality,and it can make readers have further critical understanding on these kind of similar texts as well.
