Detective fiction,as one of the most enjoyable genres in popular literature,attracts millions of readers due to its meticulous reasoning,tortuous plots and absorbing stories.It has been a long practice and tradition for the introduction and translation of western detective fiction into China.In 2015,the author of this thesis was privileged to participate in the translation work of the Chinese version of The Blue Hammer,one of the best sellers in America.In the process of the translation,with the help of her supervisor,the author gradually finished the translation work in understanding,translating,modifying,editing and finalizing this novel.Then this book was published by the New Star Press on April 1,2016.With regard to such facts,this paper mainly endeavors a detailed research on the translation of The Blue Hammer(excerpts)with the author's interpretation of the original work and her sorting out of large number of relevant information and the actual process of translation practice.The paper summarizes the characteristics of detective fiction,the usage of some translation strategies with analysis of the translation version and rectification of the errors in the process of translation in order to improve the quality.This paper,from the perspective of relevance theory,explores the specific usages of special vocabularies,long complex sentences and discourse devices in the translation of The Blue Hammer(excerpts)with the full consideration of semantic,cultural and target language readers and other factors as well as the textual characteristics of detective fiction,so as to provide certain references to the future translators of detective fiction.The paper consists of five parts.The first part is the introduction,which gives an overview of the acceptance history of western detective fiction in China,a profile of Ross MacDonald,the author of Blue Hammer,how the author of this thesis got involved in the E-C translation project of the book and the purpose of writing this thesis.The second part is the overview of relevance theory.The third part mainly elaborates the analysis applied in the E-C translation of detective fiction based on the relevance theory,focusing on the textual characteristics of detective fiction and the analysis of the detective fiction translation based on relevance theory.The fourth part offers case studies.The author demonstrates and analyzes the different cases arranging with such levels as lexical,syntax and discourse in relation to the choice of translation methodologies and strategies.The last part is the conclusion,in which the author summarizes the report and points out the limitations of this paper.
