A Study Report On Translation Practice Of Suspense Fiction Under Relevance Theory

In recent years,suspense fiction has been ranked at the top of the best sellers at home and abroad.More and more excellent suspense fictions have been introduced to China.Therefore,there is a growing demand for the translation of suspense fictions.Due to the great stylistic differences between the suspense fictions and the orthodox literary works,suspense fictions have a relatively low literary status,and the quality of the current E-C translated versions is not that ideal.Research on the translation of suspense fictions is in urgent need of innovation and development.The translator selects Lyndsay Faye's The Paragon Hotel as a work of translation practice material,and translates the first two chapters in this translation practice.Under the guidance of Relevance Theory,the thesis studies application of Relevance Theory to the E-C translation practice of suspense fictions respectively at lexical,syntactical and textual levels.According to Sperber and Wilson's Relevance Theory,communication is regarded as an ostensive-inferential process.Then Wilson's student Gutt applied Relevance Theory to translation for the first time.Translation can be regarded as two rounds of a communication processes,involving the original author,translator and target reader.Gutt emphasized that successful translation requires the optimal relevance,that is to say,the target language readers can get adequate contextual effects without gratuitous processing efforts and then infer the original author's communicative intention smoothly.To achieve the optimal relevance,translators need to establish the same or similar cognitive contexts for the target language readers on the premise of an accurate understanding of communicative intention in the original text,or to convey the author's communicative intention by using the acceptable expressions in the cognitive context of the target language readers.Under the guidance of relevance theory,the translator taking the linguistic features of suspense fiction selected as well as the differences between English and Chinese into consideration,apply the following six translation methods at lexical and syntactical level: amplification,annotation,free translation,substitution,negation translation and division & reconstruction,which effectively solves the difficult translation problems at lexical and syntactical levels in this translation practice.At the textual level,based on the differences between English and Chinese text cohesion and coherence,the translator discusses how to reproduce the cohesion and coherence of the text in the translated version,so that the text conforms to the Chinese expressional habits and meets the expectations of the Chinese readers.The fourth chapter will analyze specific cases,in order to provide some translation guidance for suspense fiction translators so the translation quality of the excellent foreign suspense fictions imported will be improved.
