Metaphor as a common linguistic device exists in all human languages and translation of metaphor has always been one of the biggest concerns within the academia.A new research perspective has emerged since the turn in metaphor studies from traditional rhetoric to cognitive linguistics.Within the cognitive framework, metaphor is pervasive not only in language, but also in thought and action, that is to say, metaphor is more than just a matter of words;it structures how we think and what we do.This thesis discusses metaphor translation from the cognitive perspective,as illustrated by the author's translation of Norman Mailer's 1973 review "Tango,Last Tango" on the 1972 film Last Tango in Paris. The thesis first introduces the kernel concepts, terms and categories of cognitive metaphor by comparing it with traditional theories of metaphor, then goes on to discuss how cognitive metaphor and its mapping.schemes will function in metaphor translation.Such a theory about conceptual mapping schemes will enable the translator to get a more accurate understanding of metaphors in translation. Then, with the author's translation of Mailer's film review as an example, this thesis proposes four strategies in practicing metaphor translation, namely omission, literal translation, source domain transfer and target domain transfer.Through textual analyses based on translation practice, this thesis concludes that the cognitive approach to translating metaphor pays close attention to text itself and thereby provides effective guidelines for the translator to achieve accuracy in translation activities.
