The Role Of The Verb Dirty Words Labeling To Emotion:an ERPs Study

Swear usually refers that the individual uses the swear words to respond to the negative stimuli or events.Relevant investigation studies about the swear think that it can help people to catharsis their emotion.In the experimental study of swear there also have the opinion that swear will enhance the emotion.But according to the study of affect labeling,swear will reduce the emotion.Whether swear is to enhance or weaken the emotion,it has not been achieved the same conclusion.So the study uses ERPs technology to study the effect of affect labeling that using the swear words on emotion to test this issue.In this paper,we adopts the classical affect labeling research paradigm,combining with high precision time of event-relating potential technology to research into college students in the electrophysiological characteristics of using the swear words affect labeling process which has been discussed to reveal the role of using the swear words affect labeling on emotion.In this ERPs experiment,the experimental materials are selected from International affective picture system(IAPS).And after undergraduate students' evaluation,selection of high intensity and esteemed experiment material were studied.This study uses ERPs technology to study the effect of using the swear words affect labeling on emotion.The purpose of study is to examine whether using the swear words affect labeling suppress emotions or not.16 college students were uesd as the subjects.The research used single factor experimental design in subjects,in which it contained affect labeling and non-affect labeling.The dependent variables was the late positive potential(LPP).The results show that:(1)before the end of affect labeling: in the negative emotion condition,the amplitudes have no differences between affect labeling and non-affect labeling in the late positive potential(LPP);(2)after the affect labeling: in the negative emotion condition,the amplitudes of affect labeling in the LPP were lower compared with non-affect labeling.The above results reveal that the inhibition of the affect labeling on emotions occurs when subjects uses the swear word to label emotion pictures.And the results also demonstrate that not all of the swear will enhance the emotion.
