British novelist D.H. Lawrence and Chinese writer Jia Pingwa have long beenlinked in a lot of similar terms: as the notorious authors of the banned books, the purveyors of unmentionable four-letter words. Though tarred with the same brush, Jia Pingwa and Lawrence didn't regard themselves as pursuing the so-called aims according to the critics. The treatment of sexual matters or the use of the four-letter words, are taken as a reaction against the long time repression of sex in the society, and most importantly it can reveal the deep-rooted consciousness buried in the minds of the two writers, which plays a very important role in then- lives, and which drives the two writers to protest against a world dominated by the reasons and attempt to create a new world hi which the basic meaning of life would be realized. Thus the two comparable names are put on the world literary map in this thesis, through a comparative study of the specific works by the two writers, mainly from the characterization, the structure, the techniques, and the language features, show how the two writers capture the felt truth that may be called reverence for life and also how they depict the tremble of life-blood consciousness though they live in the differenttimes, and from different countries. At the same time, this thesis also give an insight into the differences lies beneath the two writers due to the differences in cultural background, times they live in', and ideologies they inherited.
