Australian novel is the important part of the contemporary Australian culture,and it is a bridge of cultural communication between China and Australia.Translating Australian novel into Chinese,Chinese culture lovers can appreciate the Australian literary styles.This article is a translation practice report,and the translation of the text is selected by the Australian writer Helen Garner's work—The Spare Room chapter(9-11).Helen Garner is the famous contemporary female writer in Australia.Helen's work,The Spare Room,has a description of the characters such as Alice,Bessie and Gab,apart from the main characters Helen and Nicola.Through the description of language,behavior and psychological activity,it reflects the characters.Therefore,the translator uses the translation skills to solve problems and difficulties under the principle of “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance”.This paper is divided into four parts: the first part is the description of the translation project,which mainly introduces the background of the translation task,the characteristics of the translation task and the literature review.The second part is the description of the translation process,including the pre-translation,the process of translation and the after-translation.The third part is the analysis on translation cases,which mainly includes the difficulties in the translation task and how to solve the problems under the guidance of “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance” and the translation methods.The fourth part is the conclusion of translation practice.
