The Analects of Confucius is the first work of Chinese quotation.Based on the theory of empty categories and exhaustive classification statistics, this thesis analysis and describe the type of empty categories in The Analects of Confucius. The examples of empty categories in The Analects of Confucius can be divided into three class types: shift empty categories classes, implied empty categories classes and omitting type empty categories classes. On this basis, according to the empty categories class differences in syntactic structure, these three types still can be divided into different types of little class. The frequency of each little classes could appear empty categories classification statistics.By analysis of the typical empty categories class variants in each part structure,a variant structure formula can be overturned and summarized. The empty categories The Analects of Confucius reveal the following two points: first,in The Analects of Confucius, the number of omitting type empty categories classes is the maximum, and then the shift empty categories classes, implied empty categories classes have the minimum amount;second, among empty categories classes in The Analects of Confucius, the percentage of the NP1 position is the highest, and then the NP2 position, the NP3 position is the lowest. This conclusion is basically caused by three reasons.First, the context makes a lot of omitting empty categories classes, especially in the positions of NP1 and NP2.Second,the minor-sentence-focused type causes that displacement of empty categories classes to appear on the positions of NP1 and NP2.Third,the phenomenon of serial verbs limits the proportion of position of the implied empty categories classes.
