The concept of "Empty Category" was proposed by Chomsky in 1981.According to the source,it is divided into two categories: one is generated on an in-situ basis,including PRO and pro;the other is generated by displacement,including NP trace and wh-trace.Since these four empty categories are nominal,they are called "Nominal Empty Categories".It is confirmed by the theory of generative linguistics that "Non-nominal Empty Categories" also exist in language.Non-nominal Empty Categories refer to non-nominal language components that have no actual phonetic performance but have certain syntactic and semantic functions,including Verbal Empty Categories and Prepositional Empty Categories.This article investigates the linguistic phenomenon containing Non-nominal Empty Categories,and makes a detailed description and analysis of the phenomenon of Non-nominal Empty Categories under the theoretical framework of generative linguistics.The research of this article is divided into five parts:The first part is the introduction.It mainly summarizes the research object,research content,research significance,research method and corpus source of this article,and focuses on the comprehensive review of the related research results of the predecessors on the Empty Category theory.The second part discusses the connotation of Chinese Non-nominal Empty Categories.Including the nature and function of the Non-nominal Empty Categories,and comparing the Verbal Empty Categories and Prepositional Empty Categories with their related concepts respectively,so as to analyze the characteristics of the Non-nominal Empty Categories.The third part investigates the phenomenon of Non-nominal Empty Categories in Chinese.It mainly discusses the distribution of Non-nominal Empty Categories in Chinese special sentence patterns,among which Verbal Empty Categories exist in existential sentences without verbs,parallel empty verb sentences,"NP ?" sentence patterns,judgment sentences and double verb " ? " Words.Prepositional Empty categories exist in unconventional object sentences,subject-predicate sentences and noun trait sentences.The fourth part is a study on the teaching of Non-nominal Empty Categories.Based on the analysis of errors collected from HSK Dynamic Writing Corpus and previous studies,this paper finds out the causes of errors,and puts forward corresponding teaching suggestions for the teaching of Non-nominal Empty Categories as a foreign language based on the analysis results.The fifth part is the conclusion part,which is the summary of the whole paper,and points out the limitations of the research,as well as the problems to be further studied.
