Presupposition In Press-Conference Questioning And Their Interpretation

Today's international exchanges have become increasingly frequent.Therefore,it is very important for China,a rising power,to convey the message correctly and appropriately through the channel of press conferences,in which interpreters serve as the bridge for communication.Many scholars have made researches on how to improve the quality of interpreting,but few touched upon the important role of presupposition.This thesis mainly studies presuppositions in press conference questioning and their interpretations.Presupposition exists in languages.People use it to express the information already known,and it is also called “pre-condition” or “premise”.Presupposition can be divided into two kinds: semantic presupposition and pragmatic presupposition.The author focuses on the role of cultural and psychological presupposition in interpretation.Firstly,interpreters should be familiar with the language style of the journalists.Then,the author studies the cultural presupposition from three aspects: cultural-loaded words,idioms and rhetorics and expressions with Chinese characteristics,and the psychological presupposition used by journalists.The author of the thesis believes that if the interpreters understand the presupposition in the journalists' questioning and make use of them in their interpretation,the interpreting quality will be improved.
