Procrastination is very general in daily life,especially prevalent among undergraduate students,and it has been evaluated that nearly half of undergraduates are engaging in procrastination consistently and problematically.The chronic procrastination results in poor performance and brings a negative influence on individual physical and mental health.Therefore,going an in-depth study to explore the internal mechanism of procrastination,making a progress on the theory of procrastination,and bettering the previous theory of procrastination are extremely essential and necessary,moreover providing a theoretical basis for educators and counselors.In the previous study of procrastination,the procrastination was usually divided into many classifications,and not regarded as a general conception,which might make biased result.Noticing that,this study combined arousal procrastination and avoidant procrastination as general procrastination and exploring the relationship among general procrastination,neuroticism,conscientiousness,self-efficacy,motivation to succeed(Ms)and motivation to avoid failure(Mf).Furthermore,self-efficacy is a kind of self-perception experience,and motivation is the inner drive of individual action,which means that self-efficacy and motivation may lead to a mediation effect on the relationship of general procrastination,neuroticism,and conscientiousness.The mediating effects of self-efficacy and motivation were evaluated in this study.This study mainly employed questionnaires to investigate about 500 undergraduates,and the conclusions were briefed as follows:1.General procrastination was positively correlated with neuroticism,and negatively correlated with conscientiousness.2.General procrastination was negatively with self-efficacy and motivation to succeed,and positively correlated with motivation to avoid failure.3.Hierarchical regression and sampling inspection showed that self-efficacy,motivation to succeed and motivation to avoid failure had a partial mediation effect on the relationship between neuroticism and general procrastination,but not the relationship between conscientiousness and general procrastination.4.Self-efficacy had a partial mediation effect on the relationship between neuroticism and general procrastination.5.Motivation to succeed had a partial mediation effect on the relationship between neuroticism and general procrastination.6.Motivation to avoid failure had a partial mediation effect on the relationship between neuroticism and general procrastination.
