In recent years,since China has begun to pursue foreign transmission of Chinese culture as a state policy of it,the foreign translation of texts of traditional Chinese culture has become more and more important.An important part of it is the English translation of the texts of traditional Chinese culture and the academic achievements made by contemporary Chinese scholars.In the profound traditional Chinese culture,the traditional Chinese aesthetic culture makes the most brilliant,which covers ancient literature,religion,art,and so on.Zhongguo Shenmei Wenhua Jianshi is a Chinese scholarly book which explains the development of traditional Chinese aesthetic culture from time immemorial to late Qing dynasty,tries to explore the most valuable resources of aesthetic culture in history.The English translation of this book is significant to carrying forward and spreading traditional Chinese aesthetic culture.There has been no English translated version of this book available now,so its English translation will be of considerable value in practice and scholarship,and be original.This research project takes the original Chinese text of the sixteenth chapter “Tremendous Momentum in the Heyday of the Tang Dynasty: Sculpture;Music and Dance;Calligraphy” of the book as its object of translation.The sixteenth chapter mainly concerns the opera,visual arts,literature,and grassland customs of the Yuan Dynasty.On the whole,regarding its writing style,this chapter is featured by the typical Chinese writing style of works in humanities,which is academically formal and rigorously coherent,and meanwhile shows considerable features marking literariness and artistry.Based on his experience of translating it,the translator writes his work report and describes and explains the translation process,involving the background and significance of the project,the process of translating,and analysis of difficulties in rendering.In translating it,the translator finds how to render well the literary and artistic content in the original text difficulty.Therefore,he dedicates a separate section to reporting his application of the impressionistic approach to translating,which is aimed to overcome that difficulty.In the process of translation,the translator adheres to the main principle of conveying accurately the original values,theoretical opinions,and ways of expression and meanwhile treating properly the literary features of the original,to ensure the affinity of the English version with the Western scholarship and effective communication.His overall translation strategy is to employ domestication as his primary strategy and foreignization as the supplementary,and where the original cultural facts are concerned,under the precondition of readability,to consider foreignizaiton as the dominant.On the language operation level,besides his flexible use of various translating methods,he practices the impressionistic approach,aiming to render the culturally colored parts of the text.As a category of translating methods,the impressionistic approach is more applicable to translation from Chinese into English.The approach stresses the semantic conveyance yet goes beyond that,for its pursuing both rendering the original meaning and the original flavor,and meanwhile it indicates the aesthetic features characterizing Chinese way of thinking on artistry.The overall translation objective of the present project is to reach the standard for publication of translated academic works in English and to report accurately to the outside world the scholarly achievements made by contemporary Chinese scholars.
