Currently China is making great efforts to enhance her cultural soft power,promoting her cultural exchanges with other countries.Spreading Chinese culture and helping the outside world understand truly China through translating Chinese culture texts into other languages to deepen mutual understanding between them are the social responsibility and historical mission we translation learners and scholars should take and fulfill.In the traditional Chinese culture,the traditional Chinese aesthetic culture makes the most resplendent component and its English translation is of much significance to the Sino-foreign cultural exchanges.The scholarly book Zhongguo Shenmei Wenhua Jianshi(A Brief History of Chinese Aesthetic Culture)offers a comprehensive introduction and wide-ranging description of the traditional Chinese aesthetic culture from time immemorial to late Qing dynasty.By a chronological account of the aesthetic culture trends of the past dynasties,it strives to explore the most valuable aesthetic culture resources of ancient China,presenting the most representative artistic tastes in Chinese history.An English translation of the book will surely be conducive to spreading traditional Chinese culture to the outside world,and as there has been no English version of it available in publication,an attempt to translate it into English and its related analysis will be original.The present project aims to conduct the English translation of Chapter Fourteen “Gorgeous Culturescape of Northern Song and Reduced Landscape of Southern Song”.This chapter introduces the aesthetic cultural history in the Northern Song and Southern Song dynasties mainly with regard to porcelain,verse,painting,and poetry.The text,humanistic and scholarly,is not only salient with its academic thought and rigorous presentation of it,but also rich in literariness.Based on his practice of translating the text of the chapter,the translator writes his work report,involving the background and significance of the project,the analysis of the Chinese text,the process of translating,and the difficulty analysis.To the translator,for better spreading traditional Chinese aesthetic culture,documentary strategy shall be adopted as a dominant translation strategy,and literary strategy,the supplementary.Therefore,he dedicates a considerable part of the main chapter to reporting his application of the documentary strategy and literary strategy in translating the original into English.In translating the chapter,the translator adheres to the principle of academic,cultural,artistic,and readable English translation.To put into practice this principle,he adopts the main strategy of documentary translation,and strives to reserve properly the values,belief system,theoretical form,frame of thought,and expression ways of the original text,and meanwhile,via the literary strategy,ensures that the English translation presents features of English academic prose,so that the translated version can be easily accessible to the target readers and realize effective scholarly communication.On the language operation level,according to concrete contexts,the translator employs various translating methods flexibly,such as transliteration(possibly supplemented with some sense translation),literal translation(possibly with some annotation inside or outside the text),free translation,and omission.By all these efforts,the translator aims to render his English version in a way meeting the standards for publication of translated academic works in English,thus reporting to the outside world the scholarly achievements made by contemporary Chinese scholars.
