The Buddhism of the Yuan dynasty,which is inherited from the Song dynasty and followed by the Ming dynasty,constitute an important chapter in the history of Chinese Buddhism.The Mongolian regime took tolerance policy of all kinds of religious faith at that time.In the Yuan dynasty Hebei region belongs to central southern district which is supervised by the Central Secretariat.Because of its favourable geographical location and its abundant natural resoures.This area became the giant battlegrounds of political ruling and military conquest.It also became the center of economic development and cultural domination.Therefore,the Buddhism of Hebei has been greatly development at that time.Hundreds of Buddhist monastenes was bulid in the Yuan dynasty,and the most famous one in Hebei province is the Bailin Temple.From the thirties of the twelfth century to nearly a century,with the Mongolian developed and expanded,five kings of the dynasty protect the birthplace of Bailin in succession,they are Yuan Taizong,Yuan Shizu,Yuan Chengzong,Yuan Renzong and Yuan Wenzong.After centueies' rise and fall,this Zen ancient temple passed down from generation to generation and large numbers of great monks care forward.The first chapter gives a brief overview of the development of the Buddhism in Hebei in the Yuan dynasty.Because there is a great difference of regionalism between Hebei and Beijing from now to Yuan dynasty,the district of this research has been settled at the beginning of the study.Then,the development of the Buddhism in Hebei before the Yuan dynasty was reviewed.Finally,it introduces the Buddhist policy of the rulers and the fiourishing of Buddhism in Hebei,and makes a general statistics on the number of monasteries.The second chapter introduces the development of the Bailin temple in the Yuan dynasty.Bailin temple was built in the in the last Eastern Han dynasty,at the beginning it was called Guanin Yuan.In the Song dynasty it was called Yongan Temple,then in Jin dynasty it was called Bailin Buddhist Temple.At last in the Yuan dynasty,the name was changed into Bailin Temple.With the research work on the inscription rubbings of “Song Yongan courtyard monk mind”,“Daikin Wozhou Bailin Buddhist Temple three thousand town monument”,“Yuan rebuilt Bailin Zen monument”.This chapter makes a verification of its several times rename.And at the same time,this chapter introduces the development of the Bailin temple in dynasties.This chapter underlines the development of Bailin Temple in the Yuan Dynasty,especially the protection from the rulers.This chapter also introduces the Zhaozhou tower.Zhaozhou tower was believed to be build for Cong Shen,a master of Zen who lived in the Tang dynasty.This tower is considered to be the Yuan Dynasty.By comparing this tower with Linji tower which was build in the same period of time,and consulting some literature.It is assumed that Zhaozhou tower was built in the late Tang dynasty or the early period of Five Dynasties,and it was reconstruction in the Jin Dynasty.The third chapter mainly focuses on the monks' activities.The development of the monastery is inseparable from the monk's work,such as masters like Gui Yun,Yuan Lang,Lu Yun,who made significant contribution to developing the Bailin Temple.According to their tower inscriptions— "Hunyuan state Yongan Temple of the first generation of return to the cloud Zen master tower Ming","Zhaozhou Bailin Yuanming Puzhao on the river big monk monument","Buddha really distinguish Guangfu round The Great Zen Master Ching Shou Temple presided over the elders Lu Yunxing public cursive Ming ".The third chapter illustrates these three masters' life experience and their contributions to the development of the Bailin Temple.Communication between monks of Hebei and Beijing is frequent.A monk can even be the abbot of two temples at the same time,usually one is in Heibei and the other one is in Beijing.Therefore,the communication is not limited to monks,there are also a lot of mental exchanges and fusions.This chapter also carries out research on their contacts with other monks.The fourth chapter is the Bailin temple and the sect.The interact between monks in different sects with impacts their thinking pattern.And this ideological influence will no doubt affect the entire thought of the monastery.Bailin Temple was a Zen monastery in Tang dynasty,then it become a law in Jin.At last,it turned to be a temple in Yuan dynasty.In the end of this thesis,the influences of different sects on Bailin Temple will be discussed.At the end of the Tang dynasty,Congshen and Yixuan came to Linji Temple and Guanyin yuan respectively.The relationship between Congshen and Yixuan is like uncle and nephew.Similarly,Guiyun and Haiyun,which has the same relationship as Congshen and Yixuan,also came to Hebei in succession.Their interact will also be discussed in this chapter.
