Pipa,a Chinese lute,has been played for almost two thousand years in China.At present,there are over 70 different performance techniques of Pipa music that have been created.The left hand technique is one of the basic techniques,including Yin,Rou,Da,Dai,Tui,La,Chuo,Zhu,and Fanyin(in Chinese).These techniques are very important to create melodies,tunes and special effects,which plays a significant role in the expressiveness of Pipa music."Chuo and Zhu" are the typical left-hand techniques that people use the left hand fingers to press the strings and frets which are pushed inwards or pulled outwards along the fret in order to raise the pitch of the string.This kind of particular technique extraordinarily expresses the melody lines and diversifies music tunes and styles,which has produced a unique artistic effect on music.The paper studied on "Chuo and Zhu" techniques from the perspective of analysis and summarize,analyzed what kinds of factors could influence its development and its application in different periods of Pipa music history and concluded on its significance.What's more,it made a further study about the value of these two techniques on Pipa music performance.
