National cultural image reflects the “soft power” of a country.Nowadays shaping and transmission of national cultural image has been one of the hot issues in the world.China has also been attaching great importance to the significant role of national cultural image in realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Ever since the Eighteenth National Congress of the CPC,the issue on the construction of the national discourse system has been proceeded to the national strategic level.President Xi Jinping has been encouraging the promotion of Chinese cultural image by telling “Chinese story” well and building up the great sound of China so as to pave the way for the realization of the Chinese Dream.News media,being the “face”of China and the “storyteller” of “Chinese story”,plays a vital role in cultural communication.Naturally,Chinese cultural reports become the main channel for mutual understanding between the international community and China.China Daily,as one of the largest and most influential foreign language newspapers in China,is largely preferred by high-end readers both at home and broad and enjoys good popularity and a high reprint rate in international communities.Consequently,as the authoritative representative in the industry,China Daily plays its indispensable part in Chinese cultural transmission.However,through literature review,the writer finds that current researches on Chinese cultural image construction are mostly done from the perspectives of politics,economics,journalism and communication,etc.All those help smooth the way for better interpretation of the importance and general plan of the construction of national cultural image from a multiple angle of view.But few concern media's conceptualization of cultural events and the discourse mode in the construction of Chinese cultural image with authoritative and detailed corpus.Therefore,this paper chooses cultural reports in China Daily,the authoritative representative in the industry,as the research subject and attempts to look into the cognitive mechanism of the discourse mode of the cultural reports in the light ofCognitive Linguistics.By bridging the discourse mode with foreign language learning,this article also aims to throw some enlightenment on foreign language learning in an attempt to facilitate foreign language learners' intercultural communicative competence and cultural transmission ability.Three research questions are put forward in this paper:Question one: What is the discourse mode of cultural reports in China Daily?Question two: What is the cognitive mechanism of the discourse mode?Question three: What is the enlightenment on foreign language learning?For the first question,two hundred and sixty pieces of cultural reports(236,380 words in total)in China Daily(2012.12-2014.12)are selected for analysis.Through discourse analysis,it is found that the discourse mode of cultural reports in China Daily covers three aspects,namely,the construction of cultural event situation,the proper choice of the event elements,and the interactions among elements.It is argued that China Daily is good at foreshadowing background information based on human's common embodiment and cognition,selecting proper event elements,and balancing the multiple interactions among elements by surface and deep eventualizing process.Consequently,certain cultural values are encoded into discourse expressions and corresponding cultural images are shaped.Considering the second question,a new theoretical model,termed as Eventualizing Model,is constructed for the dynamic and relatively comprehensive explanation of the cognitive mechanism of the cultural discourse mode.As to the third question,the Three-dimensional Interaction Model is proposed based on the interwinding relationship between the cultural discourse mode and foreign language learning for better foreign language teaching,especially for English teaching.
