Research On The "Deformation Tendencies" And Ethics Of Translation In Two Translations Of Stray Birds

Feng Tang's translation of Stray Birds has caused a great disturbance since it's publication in 2015,because of the huge changes of the style in the translation when compared with either the ST or the most popular translation(Zheng Zhenduo's translation).Even some readers has had such comment that it was filled with the smell of hormone.Consequently,with the continued fermentation of those negative comments,it has all been removed from the stores and recalled by the publishing house in December 2015,which somehow is an thought-provoking issue that why the translation of such a well-known literature work has had such a fate-being removed and recalled or what are the real differences between Feng Tang's and Zheng Zhenduo's translation.It is evident that there are always more or less differences between the effects or goals which the literary translations expect to achieve and the final translation works,due to the various kinds of differences between nations and languages.Thus the deformations sometimes seem inevitable in translations.The principle of “faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance” has always been regarded as the golden rule of translation,while the deformation,as the opposition of the rule,some of which have always been hard to be accepted or even been criticized by people.The thesis provides a systematical introduction to Antoine Berman's(1942-1991)translation theory,and makes a comparison of two Chinese translations of Stray Birds by using the tools in his essay “La traduction et la lattre ou l'auberge du lointain”,where he listed twelve kinds of “deformation tendencies” in translation.Through the detailed comparison of the two translations,the thesis aims at testifying whether these “deformation tendencies” exist in both translations and then analyzing both the features and causes of these deformation: one is the differences of languages,while the other is the creations of translators.Based on the hitting-point of “ethics of translation”,the thesis then makes some explorations of the following retranslation matters,thus to explore the boundary of recreations in translations and draw the conclusion that without the ethical aims,the translation tends to recreations instead of translations.
