A Study On Feng Tang's Translation Of Stray Birds From The Perspective Of Poetics

The new translation of Stray Birds by Chinese writer Feng Tang set off a furor of criticism on the occasion of Tagore's 155 th birth anniversary in 2015.Born in 1970 s,Feng has been prized as the “top 20 future stars” by People's Literature,while his translation is labelled as vulgar and pornographic by literary critics and is regarded “unfaithful” according to the principle of equivalence in traditional translation theories.The previous studies on Chinese versions of Stray Birds in terms of specific translators were mainly based on their linguistic factors and translation theories.This thesis is concerned with investigating Feng's version from the perspective of translator's poetics,which refers to general rules for the inventory of any literary works in the broad sense.By analyzing and describing the content and the formation of his poetics,the thesis discusses the influence of Feng's poetics on rhyme,language,and translation methods in his translation version.On the basis of close reading and textual analysis,the thesis subsequently offers four prominent features of Feng's poetics: 1.external rhythm is integral in poetry creation;2.minimalism language style is preferred;3.the theme of sexuality is highlighted;4.writers should write without self-consciousness.Feng's views of translation are illustrated as follows: 1.poems must rhyme;2.all language redundancies should be cut off;3.ideorealmand meaning can be added into translation;4.translators should translate with self-consciousness.What's more,the thesis demonstrates briefly the relationship between Feng's poetics,his view of translation and literary creation so as to figure out how the combination of his theoretical thoughts and practice took place.
