Based on applied linguistics, the translation shift theory of Catford includes two parts, namely level shift and category shift. In this thesis, the focus lies on the category shift with an aim to analyze the rationality and availability of this theory and provide more examples for English-Chinese translation practice. All of the example sentences are selected from Abraham Lincoln,a typical work of history and literature. In terms of language style, words in the book are accurate and proper and the author was apt to express with long sentences. Therefore, during the translation process,we should highlight the sentence structure.Besides, the excerpts are the forth and fifth chapters of Abraham Lincoln, related to the history of the initial period of founding of the US as well as the knowledge of American slavery. We should also refer to historical collections when translating passages of Lincoln speeches and pay attention to the words and expressions the author used in order to reflect the original literature style. With regard to the research method, the thesis draws upon the theoretical model of Translation Shift Theory and illustrate the method from four aspects of category shift, namely, structural shifts, class shifts, unit shifts and intra-system shifts. The author demonstrates key problems during the translation practice, finds out the relevant theories and proper solution to these problems. In this study, the author illustrates the category shifts theory with examples. At the same time, some comments and opinions of other translation critics are also included into the paper.Apart from the perspective of linguistics, such perspectives as social culture and context are analyzed in the final part of the paper, with categories of logical shifts, compensation shifts and pragmatics shifts.
