In recent years, the influence of corrective feedback on L2 writing has become a hot issue. Many opinions on the effectiveness and types of feedback have been put forward in the academic circles with a series of empirical research being done. However, there is no definite answer yet.Compared studies abroad of this filed,it is relatively insufficient in China.Although some scholars have put forward their own views on the impact of different types of written feedback on English writing, few studies have been conducted on the grammatical competence of different feedback types. In order to explore the influence of different types of written corrective feedback on the grammatical abilities of college students in English writing, this paper investigated the effect of focused direct feedback and focused indirect feedback on the grammatical competence of college English writing.Eighty freshmen of non-English majors in Taiyuan Institute of Technology are selected as the research object, and the entire experimental process lasted one semester.Using the test, the experiment and the questionnaire survey, this paper tries to find out which types of focused feedback can improve students' grammatical competence in their writings. The results show that: 1)Both focused direct feedback and focused indirect feedback have significant improvement on the grammatical competence of the learners with two writing skills and the two types of feedback have a better influence on low-level students;2)There was no significant difference between the two feedback methods after one semester(16 weeks),but by comparing the difference between the mean difference, the author found that the focused direct feedback was slightly better than the focused indirect feedback;3)Students generally have positive attitudes towards teacher feedback and are expected to receive a more comprehensive direct feedback in future studies. This study enriches the previous studies in confirming the effectiveness of corrective feedback and what kind of feedback is more effective in improving English grammatical competence. In addition,it will provide some enlightenment for the improvement of college students' English writing teaching in the future.
