Abstract/Summary:
Teachers’ written corrective feedback plays a crucial role in students’ learning.A large number of studies have proved that written corrective feedback had a positive effect on students’ learning, which can lead the students to realize their errors and correct them in the right way and improve their learning efficiency subsequently. However, there is also an unanswered question about which type of feedback is the most effective one.As one of the important factors of WCF,individual differences, especially language level, will also affect feedback efficacy. The present paper aims to explore whether different feedback methods have different effects on the learning of the simple past tense in junior middle school students with different language levels.More specifically,it can be divided into the following three research questions:(1)Can direct focused and unfocused written corrective feedback promote the simple past tense learning in junior middle school students?(2)Is there any difference between direct focused and unfocused written corrective feedback?(3)What are the effects of direct focused and unfocused WCF on the learning of the simple past tense of junior middle students with different language levels? The study lasted six weeks, during which three treatments, one pretest and two posttests were carried out rigorously. There were totally 81 subjects who were divided into four groups according to their English test scores in the previous semester and different feedback methods.Namely, high level & direct focused group, high level &direct unfocused group, low level & direct focused group, and low level & direct unfocused group. After the experiment, all the data were recorded into SPSS 25.0 for statistical analysis. The main results are as follows:(1)Direct focused WCF and direct unfocused WCF can significantly promote the learning of the simple past tense in junior middle school students.(2)Direct focused WCF has better efficacy than that direct unfocused WCF has,but no significant difference between the two was found in the study.(3)For the high level students, the feedback effect of direct unfocused is better in the short term;but in the long term, direct focused WCF is better than direct unfocused WCF,and there is no significant difference between the two.For low level students, direct focused WCF has better effect than direct unfocused WCF has in both the long and short term, and there are significant differences between them.
