Language,an information system unique to humans,is influenced and restricted by certain prerequisites in its development or use, such as transmission, reception, and processing of information.A collection of these prerequisites is context. The past century has seen a turning in feature of the research on context underwent, from static to dynamic, and in nature, from monodisciplinary to interdisciplinary. In regard to the fact, the notion of context plays an increasingly important role in the research on translation as it was noticed by the field of translation since 1990 s.At present, the study on English translation of Chinese idioms has been improved significantly in terms of research ideas and areas as theoretical orientation and practice shifts.Nevertheless, the study remains to be improved in broadening the research angles, and few attention is paid to the study on behaviors of translation subject. This paper, therefore,is devoted to the study on this field from the perspective of translation subject. The paper has,on the basis of models of communicative context, firstly discussed the factors that influence verbal communication, from which we can see that contextual vision of the translator involves a cognition process during which the translator serves as a bridge connecting both SL author and TL readers.Secondly, this paper has set up a model of contextual vision of translator with reference to the model of contextual correlates of adaptability by Verschueren. It can be seen that translation depends on context throughout the process,in brief, the understanding of the source text and the re-expression in target language. In this regard, translation involves the dynamic cognition activity of a translator to elicit contextual correlates in the text world in line with that of the outside world. At last,we have analyzed the role of contextual correlates in English translation of Chinese idioms.
