Listening as one of the four skills in second language learning has played a very important role in social activities.Listening skill also has attracted more and more eyes in current foreign language teaching. However, now the level of our non-English major students is still low in listening part which is also the weakest and a most fear to learners.so it directly influences the foreign language communication.Considering the reason, the author finds that teachers and learners only attach importance to the traditional listening teaching methods and language knowledge, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and so on,'ignoring the background information, namely the schemata which closely associate with listening comprehension. Therefore this phenomenon causes the passive effect in English listening teaching. From the perspective of cognitive psychology, this paper analyses the relation between the schema theory and English listening comprehension through a brief introduction to the basic definition, classification and function of the schema theory, and puts forward a point of view that the differences from different levels of students in listening strategies mainly embody in the information processing method"top-down"(the listener use the background knowledge to make assumptions and speculations). On the basis of this, the author analyzes and demonstrates that the schema is an important factor in improving English listening comprehension level of non-English major students in China, thus the activation and construction of schemata are an effective ways to improve listening comprehension level for the non-English major students. In order to verify whether the schema-theory-based strategies can improve students9 ability of English listening, this study investigates students of grade 2015,from non-English major in Northwest Minzu University 5 and adopts the comparative tests with the software SPSS 16.0 to make a quantitative analysis, aiming to explore an effective strategy of study and improve the students' understanding ability in English listening level.Schema-theory-based strategies which can make students easily find the combining site between the schemata and the specific context, moreover, forecast actively and effectively for articles, taking the questions to understand the speaker's meaning. At the same time, strategies can also arouse students' learning enthusiasm fully,to an extent, they can change the former passive teaching strategies. The experiment shows that an application of schema-theory-based strategies can improve students' listening ability, and the top students especially have achieved a better effect in the teaching of English listening.
