Translation Study Of Sentences Under TCM Etiology And Pathogenesis In Huangdi's Canon Of Medicine From The Perspective Of Translation As Adaptation And Selection

Huangdi's Canon of Medicine(also referred to as Neijing),which is composed of Suwen and Lingshu,is the oldest classic discovered in the development of TCM theory.Having played an important role in the history of TCM,Neijing has become a must-read for TCM doctors and learners through the ages.With the deepening of China's opening up to the world,TCM has been gradually spread to the world and its charm has been appreciated by more and more people across the globe.During this process,different translated versions of Neijing represent a window for foreign TCM learners or those who are interested in TCM culture to better understand TCM.Up to now,there are 13 English versions of Neijing,which has given rise to the translation study of Neijing.In recent years,the translation study of Neijing mainly focuses on language characteristics like figure of speech,function words and fuzzy words,translation history,TCM term translation and comparative study of different English versions.Few people have made systemic or monographic study on the translation of TCM basic theories in Neijing.Against this backdrop,this thesis attempts to conduct a comparative study on the translation of sentences or terms under TCM etiology and pathogenesis of Neijing from the perspective of Translation as Adaptation and Selection.Translation as Adaptation and Selection,based on ecology,has provided a new perspective for translation study by giving a deeper insight into translation nature,standard,principle,process and strategy.Its preliminary application in TCM translation study,such as the translation study of TCM terms,has initially proved its feasibility in guiding or explaining TCM translation.Meanwhile,since it is essential to master and apply TCM basic theories which originate from Neijing in the process of TCM learning and study,it is of great importance to systemically study the translation of TCM basic theories.Therefore,this thesis tries to combine Translation as Adaptation and Selection with TCM etiology and pathogenesis of Neijing,hoping to expand the application range of Translation as Adaptation and Selection and further prove its feasibility in guiding the translation of TCM classics and TCM basic theories.This thesis selects sentences or terms under TCM etiology and pathogenesis from two English versions of Neijing by Li Zhaoguo and Wu Liansheng and Wu Qi as the objects of this study,and attempts to make an analysis of translators' translational eco-environments when they translated Neijing as well as apply the theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection to conduct a comparative study of their translation process and methods.Firstly,it investigates factors in the translational eco-environment which have an impact on translators' adaptation and selection from the macro level.Secondly,from the micro level,it analyzes translators' adaptation to source text and expected readers as well as their selection of terms and sentence organization.Finally,it compares the translation strategy or methods of the two translated versions from the dimension of language,culture and communication.In the last section of chapter V,it divides sentences or terms under TCM etiology and pathogenesis into three categories according to the degree of overlap in language and culture dimensions between source language and target language,and brings forward translation methods for each category:literal translation for the condition of complete overlap in language and culture;literal translation,literal translation with notes and free translation chosen flexibly for the condition of partial overlap in language and vacancy in culture;and transliteration,transliteration with literal translation,transliteration with notes,literal translation and use of expressions accepted through common practice for the condition of vacancy both in language and culture.In conclusion,translators have to make continuous adaptation and selection during their translation process,whereas language,culture and communication are interconnected in their selection of translation methods both at macro and micro levels.
