In the 1960 s,Julia Kristeva coined the term “intertextuality”.Subject to the theory of intertextuality,no text is independent and any text is the absorption and transformation of the other texts. This theory is then introduced into the field of translation.Translation involves the production of texts, which depends on the results of absorption and transformation of others. Thus, translation can also be understood as a special kind of intertextual activity. This thesis mainly focuses on the comprehension and expression of the phenomenon of intertextuality in regulative legal texts. The thesis investigates the passing of intertextuality in the original text so as to better express the original meaning. The English-Chinese translation of regulative legal text needs to investigate from two levels: one is to recognize the intertextual signal in the original text;the other is to transform the intertextuality and intertextual signals in the original texts into the ones in the target text. The intertextuality in the legal text can be comprehended from three aspects: lexis, syntax and text.Based upon the significance and typology of intertextual signals in legal texts, the thesis further discusses the translation methods. In legal translation, the translator needs to reproduce all sorts of intertextual information in the original text, reminding some kind of resonance of both readers in the original and target language.Intertextuality is something deep in the thinking mode, the author also emphasizes: 1)in the transformation of intertextuality, the translator needs to expand his knowledge and care more about the forefront of the subject for accurate recognition and skillful transformation of intertextual signals;2)the translator should put the readers' expectations at the first place and adjust the translated version to the reader's orientation. The author expects that the research could provide the new perspectives for legal translator.
