As a new text theory, intertextuality was first put forward by Julia Kristeva, emphasizing the openness and infinity of the text. After being proposed, intertextuality has been widely concerned and applied in many fields. Hatim and Mason first applied intertextuality into the field of translation. In the process of translation, the translator recreates the original text, making target text related to source text closely. In Jia, Ba Jin presents the pioneer consciousness and the spirit of the May 4th movement as the novel content to the readers. Since its publication, Jia has widely attracted by domestic and overseas readers. And it has been translated into more than 20 languages. Most of the domestic and foreign scholars researched the English version of Jia from the perspective of translation aesthetics and relevance theory. But studies from the perspective of intertextual translation are few.The author analyzes the English version of Jia which is translated by Shapiro from the perspective of manifest intertextuality and constitutive intertextuality. In the analysis of manifest intertextulaity translation, the author studies the intertextual references in the English version of Jia from the aspects of quotation, parody and allusion. Shapiro abides by the relevance criterion and economic criterion in order to make target text consist with the original text. Through the analysis of constitutive intertextuality translation, the author studies the intertextual references in the English version of Jia from the aspects of genre and paradigm.Because constitutive intertextuality is implicit, Shapiro abides by the economic criterion and neutralization criterion and retains the intertextual references' position in the original text to make the target language readers easily understand the original text. The research shows that Shapiro's translation appropriately reproduces the intertextual references in the original text. The translator should abide by the relevance criterion and economic criterion to better reproduce the original text when he translates manifest intertextual references such as quotation, parody and allusion. When translating constitutive intertextual references, the translator should select the appropriate translation criteria according to the translation context. This study provides a new perspective for the practice of novel translation.
