| This dissertation is a report on the translation of the first part of the classic masterpiece about natural history written by John George Wood,Nature's Teachings:Human Invention Anticipated by Nature(?.The Raft;?.The Oar,the Paddle and the Screw;?.Subsidiary Appliances.—Part ?.).The chosen part mainly discusses a series of analogies between human inventions and the structure of nautical creatures and thus,human beings anticipated by nautical creatures choose to invent raft,screw and boat.For instance,the structure of raft early used by human was inspired by a kind of ocean creature called velella.The original text was featured with vivid language,substantial and interesting contents.This translation project not only helps the translator to improve translation ability but also informs the translator of much knowledge as well as miracles and specialty of nature in social development.The difficult points of this translation project lie in the fact that the original text is characterized by vivid expressions,complex sentence structure and a plenty of long sentences,relating to numerous professional terms about nature history,oceanography,zoology and biology;therefore only by the combination of context and requirements of professional knowledge can we obtain the best translation.In light of the writing features and language expression,the translator decides to employ the text typology theory of Katherinna Reiss as the theoretical framework of this translation practice.Guided by the text typology theory,various translation strategies and methods are employed to solve difficulties of this translation practice.This translation project takes the text typology as the theoretical framework to facilitate the normative development of practice;in turn,the translation practice also further illustrates the importance and plausibility of text typology.Through this translation practice,the translator has a deeper understanding of the requirements of translation work. |
