A Report On C-E Translation Of Strategies Of Rebuilding Tourist Destinations In Sichuan Province After Wenchuan Earthquake(Excerpt)under The Guidance Of Katharina Reiss’s Text Typology

The building of tourist destination plays a significant role in the development of tourism.It is hard to rebuild tourist destinations under the backdrop of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake or the pandemic.The book titled Strategies of Rebuilding Tourist Destinations in Sichuan Province After Wenchuan Earthquake provides some useful ideas and plans we can learn from.The source text is based on the chapter 8 of this book,which mainly discusses the characteristics of Sichuan outbound tourism market and presents detailed strategies to develop it.According to Katharina Reiss’ s text typology theory,the source text falls into content-focused text.As for content-focused text,Reiss proposed two translation principles: First,the translator should transfer the content invariably.Second,the translation should always be oriented to the target language.In other words,the translator should convey the contents faithfully and follow the grammatical rules of target language,its linguistic habits and cultural differences.Based on the two principles and characteristics of source text at lexical,syntactic and textual level,the translator adopts eight translation techniques in the process of translation.For instance,inversion is used to translate laws and regulations in the source language.Combination is usually adopted for loose sentences,run-on sentences in Chinese.With different techniques combined,synthesis is used for words and sentences with Chinese characteristics and long and complicated sentences to avoid Chinglish,making the target text more idiomatic.To sum up,guided by the translation principles of content-focused text proposed by Reiss,the translator applied some translation techniques and completed this translation task.This translation practice improved the translator’s professional skill in translation.Besides,the translator expects the translation could enrich the study on the translation of similar texts about outbound tourism and offer some valuable strategies in developing outbound tourism market for other regions.
