A Comparative Study Of Translator's Subjectivity From The Perspective Of Hermeneutics

Since the 1970s,the "cultural turn" has appeared in translation studies.As one of the main subjects in the course of translation practice,the translator has been gradually recognized and valued.Then,the scholars in the academic circles gradually began to pay attention to the target language culture.Therefore,among the many schools,as a special theory on the study of the interpretation,Gadamer's Philosophical Hermeneutics has provided a theoretical support for the translator's subjectivity research.Stray Birds is a collection of poems which written by the famous Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore.It has a variety of translated versions of Stray Birds in China since the 1920s.Among them,Zheng Zhenduo's version is the most representative and Feng Tang's version is the most controversial.The previous researches mostly focused on the comparative analysis of the different versions of Stray Birds from the perspective of linguistics and the systematic studies on translator's subjectivity were slightly inadequate.Therefore,the author explores two Chinese versions of Stray Birds by using translator's subjectivity in the Hermeneutics,and finds that the differences on translator's subjectivity are mainly reflected in three aspects,namely,the translator's historical understanding,choice of translation strategies and creative translation styles.The author also uses the literature method and the comparative research method in the qualitative to select some relevant examples,and then makes a comparative study of the differences on them from the following aspects,namely,the social background,target readers,translator's personality and the purposes of translation.In this thesis,from the comparative study of two Chinese versions of Stray Birds,it reveals the following aspects:firstly,although the translator's subjectivity affected by various factors,translators can still bring their subjective initiative into play actively.Secondly,the translator's subjectivity is an effective way to make translation criticism and a basic and comprehensive approach to examine the two versions.Thirdly,Zheng Zhenduo's translation is more faithful to the original text while Feng Tang's translation is carried out by many self-creations.In addition,through the comparative study of the translator's subjectivity in two Chinese versions of Stray Birds,the author expects that the translation circle will have more researches and discussions on the subjectivity of translator,as well as promote the emergence of new translated versions.
