Writing,as one of the important teaching objectives of the college English teaching,has attracted much attention of many researchers within the teaching field.At present,with the gradual and continuous development of teaching techniques,the traditional teaching pattern of college English writing can't give full play to its function of realizing the educational objective of those who major in linguistics because of its shortcoming that is a passive and teacher-centered process.Thus,It is important to bring a new teaching method into college English writing.This thesis tries to apply the project-based learning approach into college English writing class by means of empirical study.PBL is a new teaching approach that is characterized by student-centered via the realistic situation so as to help the student have a better understanding of the professional knowledge.Based on constructivism and pragmatic theory of education,the thesis applies the project-based learning in college English writing.The experimental students can accomplish some project activities with the help of the teacher's design and instructions in an authentic environment,which stimulates students' improvement of writing proficiency by constructing their own learning system of knowledge.In order to realize the goals of the study,the author carries out the experiment in Xi'an Medical College.120 sophomores who major in medical images are selected as the subjects.60 students are chosen to be the experimental group(EG)under the PBL,and the rest 60 subjects should be the control group(CG)taught by the traditional approach.The study will be carried out via the major method named experimental teaching with quantitative and qualitative analysis,and it is aided by interview,questionnaires and tests in the process so as to verify that the PBL does better than the traditional method in improving students' English writing scores.Finally,the results show that the scores of experimental students outweighs the the controlled class.To rephrase it,students' writing proficiency could be improved effectively under the instructions of the PBL.In addition,students' autonomous ability to learn has been promoted with the improvement of their motivation and interests to some extent.What's more,the author aims to provide a new prospect for the teaching of college English writing in the future.
