With the development of the times, competitive sports become more and more important. There are some studies on competitive sports in China, but there are fewer books on it from the perspective of neuroscience. Thus, chapter one to three including introduction of The Athletic Brain:How Neuroscience Is Revolutionizing Sport and Can Help You Perform Better are selected by the translator as the source text. The aim of this translation project is to provide some reference to the studies on competitive sports from the perspective of neuroscience.Through discovering the mysteries of the athletes’ brains, the related studies in our country are hoped to be promoted and skills or shortcuts are provided for athletes as well as sports enthusiasts to improve their performance. The book is written by Amit Katwala, who is the senior writer of a sports magazine.Being published in August 2016,it briefly illustrates how elite athletes in different arena(such as football, racing, skiing etc.)make their decisions and how trainings change their brains and improve their performance. The translation of this text is mainly based on schema theory, which is a part of translation process model study, decoding the source text and encoding the target text from syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects.Because of the scientific nature of the source text, terminology, abstract concepts and long sentences are difficult to translate. And it is somewhat hard to reach a perfect stylistic equivalence. Also, some translation skills such as conversion of words and voice, amplification, omission etc.are adopted during the translation. In the translator’s view,it’s of great significance to convey the information accurately for this text. This project contains two parts. One is the E-C translation practice,in which about 22,000 English words are translated. The other is the translation report based on the translation practice, including four chapters.First,it gives a brief introduction of the translation background, the main theory adopted in the translation process and the significance of the translation project. Then the information of the source text is introduced, including the author and the press, the content and the language features. In the third chapter, the most crucial part, the translator gives a detailed account of her preparation for the project, her implementation of the translation, the difficulties she met,and the methods and skills she adopted in the translation. At last, the translator makes a brief conclusion of the experience and enlightenment learning from this translation practice, and the limitations and the problems unsolved are illustrated as well. The significance of the translation practice is not only to open a window for Chinese to cognize how neuroscience can significantly change sports, which is hopefully to improve our national sports cause and personal sports ability, but also to make some contribution to the research of translation process in light of the similarity of nervous system changes between sports training and translation processing.
