Since the turn of the new century, China has successfully hosted a considerable number of major international sporting events. Part of the success is attributable to the adequate translation of related sports texts. Therefore, it is of imperative necessity to conduct researches on the translation of sports texts. However, the existing studies in this field have focused more on the E-C translation than the C-E translation. This thesis, therefore, marks an attempt to make systematic and in-depth discussions about the translation of Chinese sports texts from the perspective of the schema theory, in a move to further promote studies in this regard. The schema theory falls under the psychology domain. It has seen extensive application in such fields as reading comprehension, second language learning, etc. and is now gradually marching its way into translation studies. The top-down and bottom-up information processing mechanism within the theory has added new layers to the interpretation of translation process. This thesis is setting out on a journey to find out the role the schema theory plays in the translation of Chinese sports texts in terms of linguistic schema, formal schema, content schema and cultural schema; elaborate on the influence the schema theory has on the translation process; and explain in great detail how translators can draw upon the schema theory to enhance the quality of translation.Through the analysis, this study concludes that only by activating pre-existent schema, namely prior knowledge, and giving full play to cognitive capability will the translator be able to render high-quality translation of Chinese sports texts.
