Study On The Cinematographic Adaptation Of Journey To The West Since The 20th Century

In 2013,Stephen Chow directed the film Journey to the West:Conquering the demons,which triggered the adaptation boom of Journey to the West in domestic film market.Many classic stories people familiar with are adapted to films since then.These films brought audiences unprecedented gorgeous visual experiences.Although these film adaptations have won high box office value,on the contrary,the evaluation of them are not as good.Under this circumstances,this paper takes 2000 as a time point,choosing the domestic adaptions of The Journey to the West in 21th century as research object,analyzing the deep cultural reason why adaptions of it became popular in film industry from three aspects:the novel's artistic characteristics,the aesthetic acceptance of the audiences,and the objective external conditions.The adaptation involves the transformation between two different kinds of art.The original text is changed into the screenplay;abstract thought into concrete presentation.Therefore,differences between the adaptation work and original work are inevitable.This essay mainly discusses the present situation of the movie adaption of Journey to the West from the aspects of story,character image and connotation.The breakthrough in the visual performance of the film adaptions of Journey to the West let us see large market prospects of the domestic magical.However,nowadays,adaptions are generally showing a trend of pandering to the market,which makes the film adaption over-focus on sensory stimulation.The author uses the adaption theory to analyze the films in 21th century,hoping to provide reference of inheritance of literary classics,film adoption and construction of domestic magical fantasy.
