This is a translation report and the translation material is selected from chapter two "Chinese Religion" of Dreaming in the World's Religions, written by American psychologist Kelly Bulkeley. In this report, the author analyses the back-translation of many cultural elements with strong Chinese characteristics, illustrating how to achieve source culture restoration. The translation material,Dreaming in the World's Religions demonstrates how individual dreams have shaped and interacted with different religious traditions through history in the world's religious traditions.Starting with Chinese traditional Confucianism and Daoism, this chapter "Chinese Religion" analyses how dreams have profoundly influenced Chinese culture with the evidence of historical records and literary works.Back-translation is a special phenomenon in translation. As English literary works concerning Chinese-specific items and cultures are translated back into Chinese, the author will encounter the problem of back-translation and source cultural restoration inevitably. The translation material selected covers many elements about Chinese traditional culture, literature, religions and history.First, the author defines the meaning of "culture" and "source culture restoration" specifically and analyzes the needs and acceptance of the target readers as premises. Then the author takes the back-translation of culture-loaded words, poems, quotations and stories as examples and illustrates how to adapt various translation methods to realize source cultural restoration successfully.A summary is concluded through the analysis of back-translation of cultural elements in this report, that is back-translation is more than the copy and paste of the source original.Specific problems need to be solved specifically.Translators should employ flexible methods and strategies to achieve the restoration of source culture, considering the needs and acceptance of the target readers.
