Thick translation refers to the way of using annotations and glosses to locate the text in a richer cultural and linguistic context. It is widely applied in the translation of various genres and styles, however its application in art translation is still limited.Based on cases from The Oxford Handbook of the American Musical, this study explores practical application of thick translation typically in art translation. It is found in the present study that thick translation can be achieved by visibly adding background information and invisibly fusing collected results.Visible annotation includes footnotes and in-text brackets, and invisible annotation consists of embedded supplemental information, simplified specialized expressions and thicker titles.Proper use of thick translation is conducive to facilitating readers' comprehension, but excessive use of thick translation may induce heavier processing burden on readers.
