In the year 1618,Nurhachi sacrificed at the national temple, while publicly announced the “Seven Hatreds” and declared war against the Ming Empire. The Seven Hatreds were used as a powerfulpropagandistic device in the beginning of the war.Rulers of Later Jin,like Nurhachi and Huang Taiji exploited it to persuade and divide their enemies, and also to legalize their rebellion. Therefore the Sven Hatreds indeed contributed to the rising and conquest of Later Jin.However, after the war the Ming dynasty was replaced by the Qing, the latter's legality was challenged by the interest groups of Han nation on the ground of the Hua-Yi binary, since the new conquerors were still seen as “clients” or “subjects” to the former empire. For the reason above, the Qing emperors since Huang Taiji until Qianlong initiatedthe official writing of national history in an unprecedentedscale. With those officialhistories(eg,Tai Zu Shi Lu),the emperors intended to build up their official memory of the “utmost legality of conquest in the whole history”.As the objects and reasons of the ancestral war,the Seven Hatreds with its various versions reflected the vicissitude of political situations, and the defense of the regime's legality from Qing's rulers.
