A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of Geologica-Earth's Dynamic Forces From The Perspective Of Text Typology

In recent years,in order to meet the public's needs of learning science and technology,a lot of famous books of popular science have been translated and published in China.The translation of popular science texts is flourishing accordingly and therefore it is significant for translators to find translation methods of popular science texts to make it easier to understand and meet readers' reading taste.This report analyzes the E-C translation of one part of a popular science book Geologica—EARTH'S DYNAMIC FORCES translated by the author.The author has the following difficulties during the translation process: 1)Lexical level: difficulties in translation of names of measurement,culture-loaded place names and adjectives;2)Syntactic level: difficulties in translation of long sentences and complex sentences and cultural connotation of proverbs;3)Textual level: difficulties in processing logical relationship and sentence order in the paragraph.British translation theorist Peter Newmark proposes the theory of text typology which divides texts into three types,namely,expressive text,informative text and vocative text.In accordance with Newmark's text typology,the author analyzes Geologica—EARTH'S DYNAMIC FORCES and finds that the text is an informative and vocative text because it aims to popularize scientific knowledge,and promote scientific spirit,which means the translated text needs to be reader-centered,to convey the original information accurately,and to achieve the same effect of the original text in writing style.Under the guidance of Newmark's text typology,the author proposes some solutions to solve the difficulties of the translation respectively: 1)Lexical level:word-for-word translation,annotation,conversion and extension;2)Syntactic level:segmentation and free translation;3)Textual level: explicitation and reconstruction.
