Text Types And Translation Strategies

With the improvement of the reform and opening up and external communication,China has now increasing effect on the political and economic life of the world. Chinais the strongest developing country in the world, whose policies must keep a close eyeby Chinese and foreigner. Consequently, Government Work Report is as the main formfor national political propaganda, whose importance on translation is self-evident. And2010Government Work Report will be as the subject of the study in which a largenumber of sentences are analyzed in detailed as a first-hand information. The thesis notonly reviews Reiss’ text typology theory, but also explains Newmark’s classificationson text typology and language function theory, which shows us the fact that the texttype and text function serve as a guiding role for the translation, especially fortranslation strategies and methods of political materials.First of all，the main principles of the text typology theory will be discussed，whichwill give guidance and help for translating political documents. Government WorkReport belongs to a peculiar text type，which is delivered orally by Premiers at thePeople’s Congress，yet is written with extreme elaboration, therefore, the illustrationwith regard to its stylistic features will constitute the important part of the thesis. Inaddition, the thesis will apply the text typology in the elaborate analysis of the report，which contributes to the comprehending of the report．The author of this thesisdiscusses specific methods concerning interpreting the translation of Government WorkReport as informative text, expressive text and operative text respectively. Forinformative text, explanational translation and division are suggested; for expressivetext, faithful translation and literal translation are applied, combining with expressionmodification; for operative text, both addition and ellipsis as well as reconstructing are presented.In recent years, some scholars have been on the study of the text typology theory,but few theories are applied to Government Work Report. According to this, the authortries applying the theory to the translation of Government Work Report, aiming toexplore the influence on the translation of Government Work Report, in order to providesome inspiration for the English translation.Despite of its limitation, this research is significant not only in practical aspect butalso in theoretical aspect. Practically, it suggests a series of methods for the translationof Government Work Report which provides guidance to avoid errors when translating;theoretically, it indicates that it is feasible to analyze the text types of Government WorkReport according to the text typology and adopt communicative translation approachesto explain Government Work Report.
