During the end of nineteenth to the early of twentieth century when the E uropean traditional art was undergoing huge impacts,some pioneering modern art schoo ls appeared.Expressionism is one of the representative schools.First of all,the word Ex press refers to artists’ self emotional expression tendency that is more than objective des cription during the process of creation,which is opposite to the word of Representation.Expressionism artists were initially influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and Matisse,and t hey preferred to use crazy lines and strokes,emotional colors and twisted images to com pose extreme visual impact paintings and describe individual thoughts.Furthermore,the se artists’ subjective ideas which were vented in different ways of creation through their own understanding mostly came from the their living social environment and backgrou nd.Due to the influences by Nietzsche’s subjective idealism philosophy,artists exposed their feelings straightly without any disguised.Therefore,almost all of the paintings fro m expressionist artists have some common features as distorted images,bright colors,u nconscious painting techniques,unscientific formats,and irrational deep emotions.The y applied Germanic Barbarian arts,Medieval Gothic arts,and fused with their own wor ks,with the subjective mental consciousness,formed the deep-layered fantasy descripti on to express potential personality underneath abstracted appearance.In this dissertation,beginning with the introduction of origin and development of Expressionism,we will mainly analyze the artists’ emotional expressive methods from their attention to social r eality,composition,shaping characteristics,colors,and lines.
